THE CALL OF A DEACON: A biblical form of church government calls for godly elders to shepherd the flock (1 Peter 5:1- 4, 20:28-32). These servant leaders devote themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4 ) which John Owen identifies as “their principle work and duty; from which those who understand it aright can spare but little of their time and strength.” Therefore, elders need qualified deacons to help them shoulder the load of shepherding. The deacon is not merely a helper but a servant-officer. A deacon is a man or woman who is a “Covenant Partner” within the church appointed, set apart, and led by the elders to assist the in the shepherding, caring and equipping the people of City Life Church and our city. The deacon body is in no way a ruling or governing body. They are in title and in role, servants of the church. As a result, the elders will be free to be dedicated prayer, oversight, governing, preaching, teaching, sheperding, and the ministry of the Word.
